I am using camtasia recorder at that the moment. if you wanna record it with sound/audi and save it as avi, it doesnt support.
So you have to save it camrec with is shitty.
I use camtasia 7.xx and it is by far the best recording app available. My caps are averaging 30 mins and around 300meg. But that is not their final size. There are a few things you will need to do if you want good quality and small file size.
1) Get divx codec version 6.8xx. Anything higher will not work correctly with camtasia 7.
2) You must have a discrete (meaning separate) soundcard for sound to be recorded. Onboard sound does not work with divx.
3) Setup your cam recorder with : tools>general > Saving> record to: .avi
next you need to setup the divx codec
go to : Input> video > screen cap frame rate > 30 (you can do 15 or 20 as well)
Video settings: Compressor : Divx 6.8xxx : and click on the configure tab : set your bitrate to anything over 512kbps. Be careful with the higher bitrate numbers as they will take more space and quality will not improve much.
Once I take the cap into camstudio, I can re encode it for a fraction of that size. Look at my current posts and you can see how small the file sizes are, with nearly no loss of quality.
*BONUS*
Now this is for anyone who caps longer shows, and hates waiting on camtasia to save them.
You can make camtasia alot faster by doing a couple of very simple things. There is a hardware requirement for this to work properly. You will need to have at least 8 gigabytes of RAM.
1) Get a free utility called Imdisk (google it). It allows anyone to create virtual, hddrives in RAM ( ramdrive).
2) Install it, go to Start> control panel> click on View by: Large Icons, and select the ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver, right click on it, create a shortcut - which will appear on your desktop.
3) Double click the desktop icon, go to Mount New tab, > Leave Image file blank, > Size of Virtual Disk > 4 gigabytes
>Image file offset - leave it at 0
>Device type - Harddisk
and click ok.
You will get a prompt telling you a new harddisk has been made, and windows will ask you to format it, do it and click ok.
Now, go to camtasia recorder, Tools> Options> Saving > Temporary folder > select the drive letter of the RAMdrive we have just made, and click ok.
The ramdrive is temporary and will be erased once the computer is restarted. You must set it up every time you start windows fresh, and want to capture , but it is literally 3 clicks to do so and the upside is great. To ensure camtasia always finds the temp directory, make sure you always use the same letter for the Ramdrive when you create it.
Hope this helps everyone out.
