Windows Media Classic is the best and easiest I've found. You can do screencaps step forward and back plus it's a damned good video player.
No graphic bells and whistles but it plays just about anything.

Hi BA,
Actually Image Grabber 2 is far superior. It will do caps for any video file your system will play - even a DVD VOB file. Its auto-caps button is much quicker than MPC, or you can select exactly which screens to use which MPC will not allow. You can be up-n-running in about 20 seconds once you've worked out which button does an individual cap (from currently showing screen) and which does the auto-cap n number of). When done 'save file' for a multi-caps image (save multiple will save the image of each cap).

Here's an image made with IG2 from Auge2000's vid. I used auto-caps, if I had been bothered I could have selected exactly which screens to use individually and had a better selection of caps. BTW everything is changable, cap size, num caps per column, gap size, shadow, font (use a fixed width font EG. any Courier font and your columns will be in line), what to say at the top.

Thanks Simi in braids is new to me I believe. As for being an earlier work, considering she just turned 20 how much earlier can it get without violating the forum rules. LOL
