Greetings!
As the title implies, I was looking for advice as to how to start and run a successful porn website.
Let's just say for the sake of argument that I have convinced a very beautiful young woman that she and I could make some money if she were to pose nude for her own website. It would most likely be soft core along the lines of something like Kate's Playground or any of the Lightspeed sites. Maybe more revealing or hard core down the road if she's into it. I have the startup costs and web development taken care of as well as a photographer. I have a degree in computer science but not a ton of experience with website creation. I've maintained some message boards and set up a couple of e-commerce sites so I think I could take care of the maintenance if an experienced web developer designed the original site. Am I wrong?
I now turn to you, experts and connoisseurs of all that is internet porn for advice.
Some things I was hoping to find out are:
Do you think I will need an attorney? I'm not sure what papers need to be filed with the government. I live in the States and I know there were laws passed recently that require some sort of registration. I can set up the actual business (LLC) so that's not a problem. I was more wondering about laws specific to pornograpy in the States. I also assume that I will have to get her to sign something saying that it is ok for me to post nude pictures of her on the internet for money right?
Where should I begin with marketing? Is it worth advertising with the promo content sites that charge per-click (or per sign-up as the case may be)? How much free content should be distributed to various places as promo? What other advertising options are there?
What are the differences between running an adult site versus a normal ecommerce site? I know that many webhosting services specifically forbid adult content. What about payment options. I've set up normal credit card processors before but does the average payment processor allow adult content transactions? I'd really like to avoid using something like CCBill or anything in that vein. Are there huge rate differences between adult hosting/payment processors as opposed to traditional ones?
Any thoughts on any of these topics would be greatly appreciated, that goes double for anyone that has actually run a site or has any other practical experience in this field. Also, I'll be sure to give ya updates as they come about.
Cheers! |

ok, here are some starters.
(I have been running a softcore adult site for a close friend of mine for 4 years. I will send you my email address by pm)
"...take care of maintenace if an experienced web developer designed the original site..."
Probably wrong. A lot depends on what you want to do with the site. If you want to make more money for you and her, then you will need to shoot videos, and if possible have a webcam chatroom. If you don't then even then you will need to tender for the production side of things. That includes producing and labelling the photos, creating thumbs and indexes, creating tpg pages (thumbnail gallery pages), fixing bugs and a whole lot more. Furthermore, updating the site with new material will cost a lot of time. And don't forget the administration.
"...Do you think I will need an attorney?..."
No. You will need an attorney if there are problems. I have an attorney friend in Moscow to whom I send cc of any "law-tinted" stuff. (copyright breachs, etc.)
"...I also assume that I will have to get her to sign something saying that it is ok for me to post nude pictures of her on the internet for money right?..."
Correct. As you are the 'first-producer' then it is sufficient for you to have a contract with her and the legal documents. IF you were to sell her series to third parties, then you would need 'model-release' forms, filled in and signed. The legal documents include a copy of her ID, usually a photo of her holding a passport and / or drivers license, student-card etc, preferably shot before or after the specific shoot. The ID should be legible. Even if you do this for her site, I would recommend doing it anyway to avoid problems later. You will need to add a 18 U.S.C. 2257 statement to your site (write to me per email, and I shall give you examples).
"...Where should I begin with marketing?..."
Start with the free tgp-sites. You can send material (links) to a number of tgp-sites such as xpirin, natasja.net, ayleen.com, milkmanbook, etc. I your work is good and they like it, then they will post your tgp-pages, sometimes with a thumbnail.
Later, join an affiliate prgram. They will publish links to your tgp's, but also take a % of the profits if someone signs up after clicking their link. Affiliate programs are often available at billing companies, or directly from the tgp-site owners.
"...What are the differences between running an adult site versus a normal ecommerce site?..."
You've answered this question already. Hosting and billing.
Check with your webhoster that they are ok about your content BEFORE paying for your hosting.
ccBill only charge when you start getting sign-ups. They will take a % of the turnover, and charge an initial deposit from the first income. If you choose to go with their affiliate program, they will administer the payments and hold-backs. There are other billing companies.. check their details. ccBill is the most well-known and trusted (by clients). Do NOT use Paypal. Paypal will block your account if they find out that the transactions are for adult content.
There is a lot more that I'll answer by email
