I use fastone image viewer, it's free, and easy to use, get it here: http://www.faststone.org/
In tools (in that program) go to contact sheet builder and you can create a contact sheet from various images you have. |

I see – I take it that the screenshots were taken in another application then? Basically, that's more or less what I just did for the screencap I just made:
I took screencaps in VLC, then used the contact sheet function in Photoshop. What I had been wondering about was whether there were applications that automatically generated "contact sheet" pages direct from a video – probably no such thing, but I though I'd check. |

Yes you can do this by using a program called image grabber II (MM mentioned this program earlier in this thread).
Excellent program and very easy to use. In this program simply go into file, then into open file, choose the video you want to take snaps of and then press the button that looks like a screen, you then choose how many snaps you want it to take, it goes through the full video clip quickly and takes the snaps itself (or if you want you can do it manualy too), when it has finished taking the snaps you can then choose (in file at top left) to save file. This creates a contact sheet with all the snaps it just took.
Note I use this program to take my snapshots but then choose save multiple (this saves each snap individually as a separate image) and then I use fastone image viewer to create a contact sheet. This way you can use only the best images from the snapshots taken as some of them will not turn out very well doing it the easy way.
You can also do same thing with media player classic from the k-lite team.

If you use a mac, you should have an application called Stuffit Expander. If it did not come pre-installed, you can download it free here http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expandeownload.html
It will handle all your rar and zip files.
For split files you will need a mac-compatible app to rejoin the segments. I find Machacha the easiest and the most user-friendly. It's free here http://homepage.mac.com/julifos/soft/machacha/ It will handle all your .001, .0, .00, and .exe files. It can join files in different directories and even different drives.
Although QuickTime is a pretty good player when it comes to decoding different video formats, its real power lies in its editing abilities. Unfortunately, to unlock access to these features you will need the upgrade to QT-Pro at a cost of $30. (Apple teases you by making all the links viewable but only the basic ones are clickable). Personally I think, if you can afford it, its well worth the money.

Wow, a lot of great info here. Thanks.
I've figured out hjsplit and I think I've got screen grabs figured out. The only thing I haven't figure out yet is why people split their files so small to upload to Rapidshare?
Sometimes I can download, say, a 250 MB file from there and sometimes I see a file split into 3 or 4 rar files and it's only 100MB total.
Is there a reason for this?
Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I'm trying to learn
Thanks again

Hi Fishbulb.
There are no dumb questions only dumb answer(er)s.
Currently RS only allow a max filesize of 100 MB.
Files greater than that have been uploaded under the short period when they did allow up to 300 MB.
The other bit I can just speculate on. Split files with 4 parts totalling 100 MB.
18 months ago RS.de only allowed 50 MB as the max filesize.
Some files will then be old and have been transferred from RS.de to RS.com with the original size preserved.
The other aspect is that you need to know about RS Premium system.
No cash refunds but you will get points on how many times your files are downloaded by free users.
Downloads by a Premium user generates no points.
Those points can then be converted into an extension of how long your own account is valid.
You can also create a new free account from the points and give to a friend.
As long as the account is active the download links are active.
For those reasons some posters make you download 4 files thus getting 4 points instead of 1.
There are other possible explanations but it would take it too far.
Hope this answers your question Fishbulb.

First post here, love this place.
I'm on an Intel MacbookPro and can open and view almost everything except the zip files that have other .z01, z02 files.. I have Stuffit Deluxe, Stuffit expander, etc. but nothing seems to handle these zip archives that have < << CENSORED >> > files.
Thanks in advance for your help.

To the best of my knowledge there are no Mac program that could handle those zips. Sorry.
I am using that kind of files myself purely for one reason.
Speed. To create and unpack a zip is a lot faster than using rar.
With the amount of files I'm handling it has a significant impact on my efficiency.
It was when I got aware of the fact, an unforseen, unfortunate sideeffect that Mac didn't have a program to handle it.
Again sorry. _________________

Hi fatire.
I'm using Winzip v11, but from v9 it should work for unpacking.
The option used is split during zip packing, set to 99 MB.
Hi MM, gone into second honeymoone yet?
This thread is far to good to just send into oblivience.
When I was a rookie I found it very helpfull to me and I regularly point to it when there are new people jumping on the train.
Oh btw, your sig is quoted in another forum, the guys who left last fall still digs you.
You're welcome Fishbulb. _________________

Ive downloaded a ton of stuff from rapid share and as I re-rar or unzip them, I get corrupted file messages on four of eight 97mb files in the WinRAR file.
I chose to keep the broken file as media and it does un zip it to an 800mb *.avi file and the file does play 2:54 min til it stops. I downloaded the first file in the archive 3 times and it is still corrupted it says.
So my question is this:
Since I can un RAR the archive and get a 800mb file that plays the first 3min, how do I correct the corrupted parts by placing the file into what video editor and excising the corrupted parts out? |

animator vlc media player (video lan) automatically detects corrupted files and will try to fix it for you when you attempt to play it first but it doesn't always work.
If it is a video you really want and isn't corrected by vlc media player then you are best making a request for same vid in the sticky for video requests then somone who has that vid may help you out. |
