Description: Based on the novel by "Jean De Berg" (the non de plume of Catherine Robbe-Grillet), the story is very much what you might expect from this genre. Going back to Pauline Raege's The Story of O and even further back to Laclos's Les Liaisons dangereuses, these stories present a voyeuristic tour of the world of the decadent rich and their very private and often perverse games involving power and sex.

The Image deals with power and sex united though sadomasochism. When Jean (Carl Parker) first sees Anne (Mary Mendum) at a typically lavish party in Paris, he is immediately drawn to her. She seems to be private and yet on display at the same time. It turns out that she is the sexual slave of Jean's old friend, Claire (Marilyn Roberts) and soon Jean finds himself being drawn to their secret world like a moth to the flame. As par the course, Claire's complex motivations and desires become harder and harder to feed and she begins to escalate the sadism to inhuman levels which are all the more shocking due to Anne's willingness to play along.

Metzger's visual treatment of The Image goes beyond his work in Misty Beethoven and harks back to his earlier, more formal films like Therese and Isabelle and Camille 2000. But here he combines his amazing sense of visual composition and rhythmic editing with a sincere attempt to examine this complex sexual triangle. Metzger and his cast are brutally direct and quite fearless in telling this story. There are few films that venture seriously into the areas that this one does. Metzger stylizes, but refuses to let the sex scenes descend into black comedy in order to let the viewer off the hook. In this way, The Image becomes a very odd experience to watch, especially when our protagonist Jean becomes a willing participant in some of the more violent activities. The character steps away from being our guide to the action, and steps into the action himself, leaving the viewer alone to make up their own mind about what is being presented.

It was pretty obvious as her face is almost, but not quite, clearly seen. She has lighter skin and shorter hair. However, a clear face shot could not be obtained for listing in the unknowns.

Luca arrives to spend a summer with his parents at their beachside villa. Also present are his sister, Fanny, his Aunt Martha and two maids. He arrives just as the two maids are about to go off on a double date on their afternoon off. In this version this is a hard-core scene as Brigitte Lahaie has sex on the bonnet of a car while her fellow maid (or actually the body double) has sex with Piotr Stanislas on the grass nearby.

Luca goes to bed early so that he can steal some of his aunt's underwear which he then puts on. Fanny takes a copy of Super Sex magazine (a bit of Italian porn product placement) from under her mattress and masturbates herself to sleep. Luca is plagued by flashbacks of near sexual encounters with his aunt as a young boy.

In the morning the maids find his black stockings and decide to take him in hand - literally. They also do the same for Fanny. With this experience behind him, and some practice with his sister, Luca finally manages to consummate his feelings for his aunt.

Description: Commentaire: Sorti en même temps que Dany la ravageuse, Dora ... la frénésie du plaisir, dernier long métrage de Willy Rozier, est présenté dans une belle copie au format 16 / 9e. Pas d'imperfection notable à relever au niveau de l'image, donc, à l'exception de l'un des nombreux stock-shots animaliers parsemant le film où l'on peut remarquer quelques lignes noires traversant l'image verticalement.
C'est donc une très bonne surprise, comme pour "Dany ...", que de pouvoir découvrir cette autre rareté du cinéaste dans une version tout à fait satisfaisante.

A noter que l'éditeur propose les deux versions du film, l'une érotique, l'autre hard. Tant qu'à faire, autant regarder cette dernière, qui permet surtout de profiter d'une très belle scène saphique entre Tania Busselier et Catherine Tailleferre.
Le bonus, quant à lui, se présente sous la forme d'un livret de 24 pages en couleurs réalisé par Christophe Bier. On y trouve, dans l'ordre, une biographie de Willy Rozier, un topo sur le déferlement du porno en 1975, la relation du metteur en scène avec le continent africain, et aussi une biographie des acteurs principaux de "Dora ..." (certains seconds rôles sont aussi évoqués). Enfin, une filmographie de Willy Rozier clôture ce livret fort instructif, qui permet notamment de comprendre pourquoi ce film a vu le jour. Si Dora ... la frénésie du plaisir s'avère moins réussi que Dany la ravageuse, il a néanmoins sa place dans cette collection consacrée à "L'érotisme à la française", et l'on espère que Bach Films sortira dès que possible d'autres perles du même genre.
