....disappear because people leech without even a thank you.

Does it drive you mad or is it self effacing of me to expect a genial 'thanks'

I totally agree with you, there are way too many leechers on this board. A simple thank you goes a long way.

I think it is polite to say thank you, but some people have made it even too much. I remember that someone had his post count decreased because he wrote the exactly same phrase in each and every place.

I must admit that even one VIP club member annoyed me with his thank yous. I've never seen him contributing, only thank you, eloquently written, though. What disturbed me most was his "40 posts to go" style of comments, which made me think that the only reason he wrote was to reach the magical limit. I won't mention any names.

I do agree that a "non file poster" shouldn't get vip status. Might be a file deleter. Mind you, not accusing anybody, but it would be a way to infiltrate. I would never have granted vip access to a non uploader.

The occasional thanks is nice, but a thanks for every download.... Just think about it.... 1 movie post and 200 thanks replies.... In order for that to work, there should be a "thanks button". I'd rather see the leeches contribute by posting movies/clips/pictures. Not that hard, if you are able to download, you can sure as hell upload a coulpe of files. Most file hosts are free of charge. And ripping a movie isn't that hard, any damn fool can do it if he or she puts his or her mind to it nowadays. But I guess they prefer leeching. The only way to make m upload is posting the best content in the V.I.P. club, but that probaly would't bother them much, you don't miss what you can't see. They would probably just move on to another forum and new posters probably wouldn't join, cause they don't get to see what's in the V.I.P. club. Shocked

By the way, I won't vote 'cause I'm a "file poster", but it doesn't bother me that much so there is no option I can choose.

I've seen one forum where U get banned for "thank you" posts and another where they get deleted. Although an expression of gratitude is nice, I agree that the endless "Thanks" posts clutter up the board and hide the real stuff. Then there's the bumping of old threads that can be annoying, especially people who say "where did the pictures go?" when the thread's over a year old. OTOH, it might bring something to the surface that someone's missed & wouldn't have seen otherwise.

I'm a little confused by this poll/post...

The following is just one guy's opinion... take it for what it's worth.

Wasn't EVERYONE a leecher at one time? The first file/vid/pic you downloaded? The second? The 10th? Doesn't everyone here browse other forums and leech files without any acknowledgment? Of course. Hell... I've seen posters copy MY links from other forums & post here as their own... with no thanks whatsoever.

Shouldn't newbies, leechers, and/or members with few posts simply be encouraged to post... instead of chased away? I suspect that everyone here had to start somewhere.

Having said that... the occasional 'thank you' I see on my thread is nice to see... it shows appreciation. But I don't upload files for the appreciation I may or may not receive... I do it to give something back... plain & simple. Hopefully the uploads are enjoyed by all who visit the thread. I occasionally give those browsing the thread an option to post a comment if they wish by posting a 'comment' link.

Should non-posters receive VIP status? My opinion... NO.
crazy_chicken makes a good point about possibly being in a position to have files deleted... this has occurred to me as well.

But they shouldn't be admonished in open forum either. I remember being slammed in open forum for making a request (to fill a set) with my first post here. I think it was totally out of line... and said so... in PM.

My point is... you never know what a person may eventually contribute... if encouraged rather than openly shit on.

Voting? I'll pass

... my two cents

I remember there was a thread by someone that was rather mad about not getting a "thanks".

Ok, I agree with a lot of things said here, maybe my original point has been missed due to my incomplete arguement.

My issue is not that people don't say 'thanks', I am quite happy for people to download my posts - as at the end of the day I uploaded them for that reason. My main point has been elequantly put accross by my learned friends and that point is there are a lot of people who take but do not reciprocate by uploading their own files to support the community. At the end of the day if we all just leeched there would not be a forum with as much content as 'foromophilia'.

As for the people who post 'thanks' just to get a VIP pass, do they deserve entry into 'Mecca'? I think not, but who am I to be judge, jury and executioner...

It's a pity that there is not a ratio system as with some torrent tracker sites, that way at least you would be sure that the people share or not be able to download. some sites require a reply to see the hidden code - but again who wants thanks a hundred times in a row...though it does keep your thread visible at the top of the forum which in turn delivers more hits to RS and adds credits towards next months subscription!

I realise that leechers are not all bad, they do visit frequently and some of them probably hit the adverts which help keep this board alive (unless you use firefox with the adblock plugin that is Wink )

All in all, maybe my little rant was undeserved...

...I wonder what is in the VIP zone, maybe I should speak to a 'thanks' poster!

Soj Out...

Then it would be so easy to set up an automated script or even just spam the forum with junk topics/replies.

One forum I know has a reputation system, where you earn reputation by posting in some sections and when you reach a certain level, you get access to another level. Reputation is added/removed by other posters who like/dislike a post so it all works in a democratic way.

The thing about leechers is you don't know they're there. In fact since several sections of this board are open, it's very easy to be a leecher without even registering.

There's another point to consider, which is that a lot of people here use Rapidshare. For them, leechers would be a bonus as the downloads would cause them to build up points.

My problem with leechers is, if you want to download what is available, take the time to say thank you, maybe even a step further and give your opinion on the posters work. As everyone here that posts content knows, it involves a lot of time to put together a thread of videos or a picture site rip.

As for newbies making requests, it wouldn't be bad if it was only 1 or 2. Go through the request threads on the top of every sub-forum, and you will see a bunch of requests without even posting a welcome message introducing yourself. I enjoy ripping sites and sharing the content, and I do it on quite a few boards, but when I see 500 views, 300 downloads and 2 replies, it is frustrating!

Ictos, I believe I know the board you are referring to, and I am also a contributor there, and I think that system works. I myself, have mentioned to this site Admin. a few times about creating a "Newbie" thread and having a minimum post requirement(25 posts, 10 of content) to see the entire board. I never heard back from G_S. So, until then we all just have to deal with the leechers.

I ran a forum board for a couple of years and we discussed installing a reputation system as a way of dealing with leeches. It was shot down at the time, but I've recently had experience participating at such a board and I've changed my mind about its value. I think it's a good way to go.

The leeches at my board contributed absolutely nothing. All they did was drain our bandwidth. Leeches here do serve a purpose though. They help keep links alive which might otherwise be deleted for inactivity.

I have no idea how the VIP club works. Do individual mods make that decision or is it reviewed by several?

ictos,I think I also know which board you mean..it's a fine idea and it works well. Not sure if would work here too.

Personally I'm not uploading for RS points(dont have a account anymore).I upload because I'm about to delete those files and I want others to enjoy them too.Or I upload just because I think it's worth a share.
A thank you or just a small feedback is always very nice.I dont mind people who just say thank you from time to time.I just dont like those 0-posters who might even complain about something without giving something back(feedback,files,etc..).
This is a public board and I guess we just have to deal with it.

Same here, but that's probably easy to guess from the way I keep rotating my file hosts. Wink

Yeah, whiners are the worst. It's when you go to all the trouble to upload something and then someone with <10 posts says "don't post this, I don't like it!". At least when people use their first post to say "plz post more", there's some feeling of gratitude, even if there's also the temptation to say "not until you post something yourself!"
