Anyone know of any workarounds for RAR files with password if I was stupid enough to not write it down?

I just downloaded a SEVEN part video, and once it was FINALLY done, I can't open it. Sad Sad Sad

BTW, the file name is "BaeL1B2"...just in case someone has seen this and knows. I have NO idea who is in it nor the name of the video...so not much to go on.

At the moment, there is no known method to extract the password from the compressed file; so the only available methods are "brute force" and dictionary-based attacks.

Basically brute force attacks will systematically work it's way through every possibility, wheras a dictionary attack works through a known word list (normally a .dic file)

I've uploaded some sw for you, link below...

I would propose scanning your browsers history, in case you didn't delete it. Maybe it helps to remember from which thread you got the video.

Arpr is considered being one of the best tools to retrieve a password. But it still takes an awful lot of time. When i remember properly then it is able to check around 30000 passwords a second on a rar file. This would result in more than 400 days necessary to get Sojourns password using the brute force method.

What may help in the future is to keep a plain textfile of passwords. Every time you encounter a password add it to the file. Have the password utility program (Arpr, for example)
check the listfile. That will be quick to do.

Brute force does take a long time to exhaust all possible characters (dependant on max characters allowed), but it is worth a punt at the dictionary attack as this doesn't take long at all... and if you limit the brute force to less characters this can exponentially speed up things...as long as the password is short...but of course you don't know the pw so...

try requesting the file in the forum...you never know who may already have it and woul,d upload it for you

If you're very lucky, a google search for the filename could turn something up. It's actually worked for me in the past.

Do you know the name of the file in the container?
