I use a 120 gig drive and just installed a SATA2 500 gig drive. When I clone the old 1, I guess it partitioned the new 1 the same as the 120 gig.

Is there any way to clone it to 500g and maybe leave off the porn files so it won't take so long? I used Ultimate Boot CD, HDClone. There's other programs on there too.

I'm being told I can resize the partition. I'll have to see if I can find that option on one of these programs I have.

Do you want to clone the master drive (probably is, no point in cloning a drive with only movies on it)? I think it would be best to istall the new drive as a slave and then "copy disk to disk" to the slave. After you've cloned it, take out the old drive and make the new one your master drive. That should work.

I already cloned the old drive, I'm going to resize the partition I guess since the partition software tool says it does that. The new drive is SATA2, and I didn't see where to make it the boot drive in my bios, but I'll look again.

My IDE slot has the 120g drive and my DVD drive.

Every program I tried either won't work, won't format NTFS, or will only create a partition up to 34g. I need a partion program that will work on a 500g drive and let me partition the 354g I have left of free space.

EASEUS Partition Manager will work for up to a 800g drive, but it isn't free.

Was i supposed to partition the drive before I did a clone?

I got a program to partition with,Bootit NG. Now I need to change the drive letters and make it boot from my new SATA2 hard drive.

My advice would be to do a complete reinstall of OS & apps on the new drive, then fit both drives & move just the data across. Alternatively, keep the partition the same size from the old drive & make a second partition. Or you could keep both drives.

I'm not going to reinstall my OS, all my software, and drivers. I just did that 5 months ago.

I want to rename my cloned drive C, but Windows won't let me rename the drive letter of my system or boot drive.

You named it F, I want to name it C. But the OS is on C, so I can't. And I can't change the C drive to something else either. I suppose after I make the new drive my boot drive, I can free up the letter C.

So anyways, How do I go about making my SATA2 drive my boot drive?

That is a catch-22. You cant rename a drive that already is C, and you cant rename a drive to C. I havent any idea how you might resolve it but it sure seems like this type of problem was encountered before and has a solution.

Just in case you havent Googled the topic, if you Google "rename drive to C" you will get a ton of links, some of which might be useful to you.

One of the resulting links is a link to the Microsoft site that apparently mentions what you are trying to do:

Ok, there is a program called Bootit that partitions and copys. The trick is, you need to install the SATA2 drivers before you clone because Windows XP doesn't come with them. Also, I have to unplug the old drive before starting Windows up so the C drive letter is available. I don't know what will happen if I were to launch Windows with both drives plugged in when they both are C, but I don't need to do that because I have plenty of free space. I can do backups without launching Windows.
