They aren't lost. They become regular uploads, subject to the 90 day from last download rule. Almost everything dies eventually, regardless of the media or the host that is used.

Don't upload with expectorations of getting it free. I joined for the download benefits. It's a whole new world when the download restrictions are virtually imperceptible.

I even joined Rapidshare.de for a month after I joined Rapidshare.com. I stumbled on a couple of celebrity site that had a ton of valid Rapidshare.de links. I thought it was worth the money. I would still be downloading on those sites if I had tried to do it for free.

I am currently using my 2nd free month. I choose the option to create a new account for the free month rather than upgrade my existing file so that I do not have to ever pay.

I thought about starting a new account, but I like the idea of my uploads lasting longer on the existing account.

They do currently give away 8,000 points for every new one month membership.

Do they give you premium points when you use your points to create a new account?

Even if they give you 8,000 points when you extend, you still have to get 2,000 more points to get to the next free month. That probably isn't that hard if you upload a new video every day, or if you occasionally post in multiple forums.

its a scam, a nice way to make money and entice people in, but still a scam. Dont join if you dont intend to purchase your account and continue it.

I guess I disagree. To me it is entirely logical that premium uploaded files would get deleted if the account expires. Why should they host indefinitely files that the original uploader is no longer interested in?? Makes sense to me as a way to clear unused space on their servers.

And as to jitna...I'm not sure what else you think they should do with the points? Give you discounts to RS t-shirts?? They sell memberships, so their offering is a way to get a free version of what they sell. RS.com is not amazon.com. I think you are expecting a bit too much. Smile

If you have 9999 points when your account expires, then renew for one extra month and get a 2nd month free (3000 automatic points puts you over the top). If you are leaving and not coming back, then why would you care about the free points you accumulated? You didn't actually DO anything to earn them.

And no, I don't work for RS. Laughing I just have tried about 800 different hosting sites and they all have drawbacks. IMHO, RS has the least, and they have a rewards program on top of already being the least problematic. 99% of complaints agains RS are from free users who feel a remarkable entitlement to getting free everything with no limitations.

Rapidshare has earned the title of being the most hated host from a free usage aspect.

When I download from anywhere, I hate the timers, redirects, pop-up windows, slow speeds, entering codes and single download limitations.

I don't mind the single download limits all that much, although I tend to be more selective on what I download when I can only download one file at a time.

Many hosts have a timer to download, but Rapidshare, by far, has the longest.

I hate having a waiting period between downloads. I have only experienced a waiting period with Megaupload and Rapidshare. With Megaupload it is at a certain MB limit. You never know when you will have to wait until you attempt to download. It may be 3 or more hours before you can download again. Rapidshare always makes you wait. The period depends on how large your previous download was and your download speed. I would seldom attempt to download a multi part movie as a free user. There are several major hosts that will host 500MB that are underused for larger files in the quest for premium points.

I always hate it when people reply to say how much they hate Rapidshare on someone's media contribution. In some places, a Rapidshare complaint may be the only reply the thread received. The posters who say "Thanks for using Megaupload" are almost annoying.

Maybe something like a t-shirt or a hat or even a keychain, or maybe an extra week or even day. It just feels like 10,000 is a very large number. It's not so much a complaint, as something i find strange. Why not have other rewards even if they completely suck?

And, realistically, if I had 9999 points I'd upload something else quickly and hope somebody downloads it and give me another point. I'm nowhere near that number. And I wouldn't be leaving if I could get another month for free. But, what can I say, I'm cheap.

They have some banners you can put in your signature.

dead link

As for the points, 10,000 is a lot of points for a free month, but there are people who get it for free quite often, if not regularly. Even if you start a new account and get the 8,000 points you may not get the next month for free, but you could get the month after that free pretty much guaranteed.

AKAbob - I think the reason that the RS waiting period for free users is the longest and the recharge interval the longest is that they get 10x more traffic than the rest of the other host sites combined. If they didn't restrict free users they would be crashed all day long and would be out of business in a week. To me the megaupload/megaerotic site(s) are by FAR the worst I have ever used. They use so much flash animation (that you have to enable to access the files) that if you have more than about 3 windows open there it significantly slows your system, and more than 3 can crash the browser at any time. I abso-frigging-lutely HATE the mega sites, and it pisses me off to see posters uploading exclusively to those hosts. But, like you, I don't waste my time complaining. I just avoid that poster from there on out.

jitna - I hear you, but I think the best way to look at it is that if you are a continuing member, the bonus points for extending mean that you are basically only paying for 5 of 6 months (or whatever it works out to being). Sales that offer buy-5-get-one-free are fairly commonplace in free markets. But at least you are willing to admit publically that you are cheap. Very Happy I actually am too, and I think I get more than my money's worth from RS, especially now that they have doubled their 5-day DL limit to 50Gb. I used to regularly have to wait a day or two to be able to DL more files, but I have not once had that happen since they increased the allotment. So I am a happy customer.

Actually, Rapidshare has become more free user friendly over the last few months.

In the past I only clicked the free pathway. It was the closest, and both free and premium went to premium if you were logged in. (I don't go direct download, but I may give it a try, as the file size and type are now on the download page.)

One day I went the usual free route and stumbled into the "Happy Hour" concept they are promoting. No bells, no whistles, no waiting. No restrictions whatsoever. They say they have the bandwidth to burn during their slower periods. (That is when I started going the premium route.) Occasionally I click the free button just to see how happy Rapidshare really is, and Rapidshare seems to be extremely happy lately.

Rapidshare keeps announcing that they are changing the download limit. Now the limit is per day rather than over a five day period. I have never hit the limit. Not once, not ever. I don't download many larger file videos.

I don't understand the 100MB upload limit, either. What is the difference between uploading a 495MB file and uploading the same thing in five 99MB parts? Uploaded is uploaded. Having the lower limit only makes it harder for the free user to obtain.

Speaking of parts, Megaupload only counts files less than 100MB for points. They seem to be trying to pull some of the traffic away form Rapidshare. I downloaded some Eva Henger videos off of a thread. They were all between 575 and 775MB. Each would require only two parts, as Megaupload's upload limit is 500MB. The poster broke the videos into <100MB parts, gaining 5 to 8 points where having two parts would have gotten him no points. It's a strange world.

I kind of like the Megas. Having an upload limit five times that of Rapidshare's limit is what leads me to use them. They normally have a download speeds at least twice as high as Rapidshare's speed. If their free dowload procedures are straining your system, give their premium service a shot. Premium Megaupload automatically goes strait to the download page. I have encountered far worse host than them.

Some divert you to other places after the download if you don't close the window.

Some you have to make a few attempts to get past advertising just to get to the download page. There is a Russian host that I never did figure out how to use, even after a Russian speaker told me the ads I was supposed to click to get to the next page of ads I needed to click to get to the download. He was in Australia, and I think he had more of a chance of getting the allocated slots for his region than did I. We probably just weren't seeing the same screens.

I have been on link protected hosts that strain my firewall, and confuse my browser in their stealthiness.

As for purchasing Rapidshare, the longer the purchase, the greater the discount, If you get into the 30% range you are already essentially getting every third month for free.

well, if what you guys are saying is true, and i have no reason to doubt you, then getting 4-7 months free a year ain't bad.

sounds like some of you have better grievances, so i'll just shut up and let you guys talk about real reasons rapidshare sucks

For some people it's the high end, or even better. I have only achieved 3 month in the last two year on premium points, and 24,000 of those points were from extending. I do get the 30% discount for going six months every time I extend.

well, 3 out of 24 aint so good. Anything less than a quarter free is just unacceptable. Tsk, tsk.

But the discount is like free Rapidhare. If I am getting a 30% discount, an additional 3.5 months every year are, essentially, free.

Overall, I have received those two years at the expenditure of the equivalent of the price of 14 months of service at the full monthly rate.

As for myself I got two free months since the start of my premium membership last October.

And I've 13,000+ points left at the moment (membership valid until September; I'll extend only for three months each time cause if they close my account permanently I'll loose less money).

So I won't complain about getting three months for free during that time.
You can get each month for free if you're a heavy uploader (I think you'll have to upload more than 80 GB of data and post the links at more than one place/board).
