Reportedly, Frankie and Johnny Were Lovers was inspired by a traditional American pop song titled Frankie and Johnny. And though, there are many elements in Frankie and Johnny Were Lovers that mirrors the lyrics from the song that inspired the film. Oddly enough, the one area where the film diverges from the song is its ending.
Content wise, Frankie and Johnny Were Lovers is best described as a melodrama that veers into the realm of soft-core erotica that finds a good balance between dramatic moments and sex scenes. That being said, though this film does have some hardcore footage, most of the sex scenes obscure penetration.
Frankie and Johnny Were Lovers' main attraction is Rene Bond (Refinements in Love) in the role of a successful singer named Frankie. What her performance lacks in-depth, she more than makes up for with her ample assets. Cast opposite of Rene Bond in the role of Johnny is Ric Lutze, who delivers a serviceable performance.
Based solely on premise, Frankie and Johnnie Were Lovers should have been a much-better film. With its predictable ending it's most glaring shortcoming. Fortunately, at just over seventy-five minutes the narrative over-stays its welcome.
A sex obsessed young-man accidentally summons a genie by stroking his cock. Will he use his wishes wisely or will his sexual urges leave him empty handed.
The Mislayed Genie was directed by Eric Jeffrey Haims (101 Acts of Love, The Jekyll and Hyde Portfolio, A Clockwork Blue).
Sometimes simplicity is actually more effective. Though, The Mislayed Genie features an anemic narrative that not much more than a few lines of dialog in-between sex scenes. The result is a film that far exceeds expectations. And nowhere is this clearer, then how effectively The Mislayed Genie uses humor. Most notably, the way which the protagonist summons the genie (the protagonist summons the genie by rubbing his cock).
The Mislayed Genie is another example of film that straddles between soft-core and hard-core sex scenes. That being said, the sex scenes are best described as serviceable. With the most memorable sex scene being the scene where a classroom turns into an orgy when a teacher shows her class a home movie shot on her vacation.
Performance wise the cast are very good in their respective roles, especially Tobar Mayo's (Abar) tongue in cheek portrayal of the genie. Another performance of note is Rene Bond (Honey Buns) in the role of a sexy school teacher who takes a hands on approach with her students.
