OK.....I have Windows XP (Home edition)....
Caught a shitload of viruses over the last 6 months.....supposedly deleted...
I can surf the web and download with no problem.....

My problem is....I have 7 Media players....WMP,Quicktime,RealPlayer,DivX,
FLV Player,KM player,Google Player....
They all worked fine before...then 1 by 1.....I would try to use a player..
PC totally freezes....can't shut it down...try control_alt-delete....nothing..
have to unplug....which I know is not good......
Now I try to use my screengrabber..(for video previews)...f^cking PC
freezes up....
OK....what I have done,,,,,
Defrag every HD......I have 3 external.....thorough virus scan,,,,,
thorough trojan scan,,,,I have also registry boosted and defrag registry....
I ran disk check several times...I went to Microsoft yesterday....
downloaded the "Malicious File remover".....that is not correct name....
I forget.....but I ran that.....took 4 hours to scan all my drives....
said NO virus anywhere......

So any PC wiz.....please help the Bear ......
I would appreciate any advice......TIA!

If the only time your PC freezes up is when you use your media players or screen grabber, then the chances are the problem is with your video codecs (both media players and screen grabbers access video streams through the codec, with some exceptions).
I would start by:
1. Uninstall all codecs, media players and screen grabbers, check they are well and truly deleted, then reboot.
2. Install the latest version of Windows Media Player from Micro$ofts' site - I know it is crap, but it is fairly robust.
3. Try that. If it works ok, then set a restore point and slowly re-install what you need - don't go crazy and shove them all back, as the problem will likely re-appear. I get by with Crystal Player and Media Player Classic which handles my screen grabs.
4. If this doesn't work, the best solution is backup all your important stuff and re-istall XP from scratch on a freshly formatted HDD. This time, use a good anti-virus! This is time consuming, but it breaths a whole new life into windows, for a while...
Good luck!

could try doing a system restore, going back to an earlier date when the computer was running fine that could help you out mate.
You wouldn't lose any information on your computer it just changes the settings behind the scenes

I second the suggestion for a reformat... sometimes it just gets really clogged up and when lots of things are uninstalled improperly there's not really any way to fix them Crying or Very sad

Before you have to go to point 4 of AltonTowers list, you might want to try upgrading or reinstalling your video card driver.

Good Luck

Wanted to say Thanks to rofflez1 and esteban_55...

Now that I a am a little more sober (seriously).........
I will try the codec update first.....to me...sounded logical.....like AltonTowers
suggested.....
My point is basically.....I want to try EVERY THING possible.....before I have to do what I hate with a passion...and that is reformat my HD Twisted Evil
F^ck!ng HUGE pain in the ass!!!!!Unless you make a ghost copy......
I hate to say it but rofflez1 your probably correct......Reformat....
GAWD....what a hassle....but it would be worth the time Idea

Video card Driver.........yes another possible solution Cool
That would be sweet if that fixed the problem....something I will further investigate....as I did a little research and found this did solve other Window's user's problems....Thanks esteban_55

Thanks for the replies Gentlemen.......
Please anymore?????????Feel free.....
Don't care about your status.....just want advice........

Hello Slade Smile I am sorry that you are having such a issue with the media players. Alton and cg10169 gave some good advice and same with roff and esteban.

I have a few questions for you.

1. What anti-virus software are you using? Some are much, much better then others. I would suggest trend micro for your anti-virus, it is very good at finding stuff has good support and it is not very intrusive.

2. Are you using any anti-spyware software beside the Mircosoft Malicious removal tool? I really have found that Ad-Ware and Spybot are two great programs to use for looking for spyware on your PC. They are free to boot so you can't beat that. I would run Ad-Ware first then Spybot to find what Ad-Ware "might" have missed.

3 What browser(s) are you using and do you have any add-on items running through them? ie. tool bars of any sort. I ask because if you happened to remove a infected file that a tool bar looks to for information or what ever it can cause issues. I can't count how many times that I have repaired a system that the issue revolved around a browser add on. A lot of the issues were with the system freezing on playing a video in the browser or opening the browser program it's self. Best bet is to turn off or uninstall all the browser add-ons and see if that resolves the issue. If it does then turn them back on 1 by 1 until you break it again. Then you know what the bad seed was and can remove it from the system.

Hope this helps and I will check back for a reply to my questions and I will add anything else I can think for you to try.

This is a save add on. ".NET Framework 3.5 SP1" is responsible for that.

So, did you try to reinstall direct x?
