The brightest supernova ever recorded, SN 1006, is observed in the
constellation of Lupus. SN 1006 was a supernova, widely seen on Earth
beginning in the year 1006 AD. It was the highest relative magnitude stellar
event in recorded history and clearly viewable from Earth in the
pre-telescopic era.

It's gaseous remains here photographed almost 1000 years later, what a
shame it wasn't 1006 years later. Very Happy

Thanks for the supernova stuff -- those kind of things are really mind boggling! Interestingly, the remnants of this star are located "2.2 kiloparsecs" away, which should equal more than 7175 light years. So if I'm not mistaken, the explosion actually happened almost 9200 years ago...

Well, on with the game - here's more historical stuff:

Sorry if I implied otherwise, Wikipedia lists the discovery date as May 1, 1006. I find it fascinating that we can photograph something that hasn't existed for 1000's of years.

No correction intended. One of the most fascinating (and frightening) aspects of our increasing knowledge about the Universe is space itself, and the incredible distances between the comparably very few and small objects that exist out there.
