This year Cate Blanchett is receiving two Oscar nominations:

Best Leading Role: Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Best Supporting Role: I'M Not There.

Can you think of other years in which an actress received the honor of being nominated for best leading role and best supporting role the same year?

I know of one case and the actress in question won the Oscar for the supporting role.

Teresa Wright

Nominated for best actress in a leading role in: The Pride of the Yankees (1952)
and for best actress in a supporting role (which she won) in: Mrs. Miniver (1942)

Gree Garson won the Oscar for best actress for her role as Mrs. Miniver

I'm gonna set a poser...

I just got through watching the Making of Aliens doc on the Aliens special edition dvd.

In the doc, the actor Michael Biehn talks about having to fly to London a week after filming commenced on Aliens in order to play the part of Hicks. This was because the original actor who was going to play the role had dropped out. Biehn doesn't give the actor's name.

So who was the actor who either quit or got fired from Aliens?

I know. Very Happy

But do any of you...? Twisted Evil

Hicks was originally played by James Remar, but Michael Biehn replaced him a few days after shooting started.
The reason according to IMDB is "the "artistic differences" between Remar and director James Cameron. Remar still appears in the finished film - but wearing the same armor, and shot from behind, it's impossible to tell the difference between the two actors."

Absolutely right! Twas a very unhappy shoot (aren't all of Cameron's shoots unhappy? Ed Harris has refused to ever talk about his experiences on The Abyss. LOL) and Remar and the original Director of Photography both left due to "artistic differences".

Some other movies where one of the lead actors was replaced midway through shooting:

Bob Hoskins in The Untouchables... replaced by Robert De Niro

Eric Stoltz in Back to the Future... replaced by Michael J Fox

Harvey Keitel in Apocalypse Now... replaced by Martin Sheen

Stephen Boyd in Cleopatra... replaced by Richard Burton

But...

Which director filmed an entire movie... Then changed his mind about the casting and got everyone in the cast to swap their roles with each other while he shot the movie all over again from scratch... And still managed to complete the film under budget? And what was the title of the film?

Thanks! Too bad Cate Blanchett did not win in 2008. No wonder why the Oscars were dull and boring the other night (I am told).

An event that changed the course of the history of Hollywood marriages and ultimately ruined the career of the otherwise much talented Richard Burton!

Sorry bout that. It's a tough one to even hazard a guess.

The answer is Woody Allen and the movie is September, which is not one of his most renowned productions.

He filmed the entire movie and then was unhappy with the way it turned out. So he recast the whole thing and shot it again. According to Mia Farrow, even after the second run through he felt it still didn't match his expectations and was up for filming it a third time, but was convince to just let it go.

The real clue is that he brought it in under budget. Allen is apparently famous for never busting his budget. Of course that's probably because every actor works for him for scale just for the kudos of working for Woody Allen, he seldom if ever uses special effects and tends to shoot fast, like Clint Eastwood (that wasn't meant to be a joke BTW. Eastwood always does like two takes and if you haven't nailed it he just moves on anyway. LOL)

And with regards Cleopatra... Someone should write a book about the filming of that movie. It would make for a GREAT read. Laughing

Perhaps Jon Stewart's most frightening night.
