Quoting the Godfather "we go to the mattresses" was the advice given our heroine to prepare for war in a relatively recent romantic comedy (1998).

Name the film.

No idea, sorry. I like the way a 1998 film is classified as 'recent'. It is 2007 you know !! Razz

Hint 2 Relatively recent compared to the original Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart film the title of which is used in the remake but not in the title.

Does this make any sense?

It makes perfect sense, but does not help me! Razz

You've Got Mail (1998)

The going to the mattresses is a reference to the battle between Tom and Meg.

The original of course is:

The Shop Around the Corner (1940)

Well I won't bother with the recent one, but is the Jimmy Stewart one any good?

Ok, what links these actresses:

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio -> Barbara Hershey -> Lorraine Bracco -> Jessica Lange -> Michelle Pfeiffer -> Sharon Stone -> Patricia Arquette -> Cameron Diaz -> Cate Blanchett -> Vera Farmiga.

Welcome back!

Well, if you like Jimmy Stewart and particularly the JS B&W films of the 40's then you will like this one. Good with a glass of wine!

Do not understand the new challenge. Do you mean: Mastrantonio appeared with X in Y who appeared with Hershey in Z and so on...?

Those are the JS movies I like the best, it's added to my DVD rental by post list.

The new question is simply what links this sequence of actresses, the ordering is key, but whether they have ever been in a film together is not part of it. A hint: They are all leading ladies in at least one film, but why this sequence, there's something that links them.

Another hint. A similar list (though not quite the same) might be:

Diane Keaton -> Mia Farrow -> Scarlett Johansson

Diane Keaton and company of course have Woody Allan in common (Annie Hall, Purple Rose of Cairo, Match Point for example).

Still stuck! Can you at link the first two or three actors (actresses) and see if I can finsih?

I can't link any without giving it away, but I can add the co-stars, too easy now though...

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio + Tom Cruise ->
Barbara Hershey + Willem Dafoe ->
Lorraine Bracco + Ray Liotta ->
Jessica Lange + Robert De Niro ->
Michelle Pfeiffer + Daniel Day-Lewis ->
Sharon Stone + Robert De Niro ->
Patricia Arquette + Nicolas Cage ->
Cameron Diaz + Leonardo DiCaprio ->
Cate Blanchett + Leonardo DiCaprio ->
Vera Farmiga + Matt Damon.

Before the hint, Martin Scorsese's leading ladies in order. I thought the Woody Allen hint would have given it away, though of course with each of WA's actresses they are in multiple WA films.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio -> The Color Of Money
Barbara Hershey -> The Last Temptation Of Christ
Lorraine Bracco -> Goodfellas
Jessica Lange -> Cape Fear
Michelle Pfeiffer -> The Age Of Innocence
Sharon Stone -> Casino
Patricia Arquette -> Bringing Out The Dead
Cameron Diaz -> Gangs Of NY
Cate Blanchett -> The Aviator
Vera Farmiga -> The Departed

I truly was lost as I was looking for fellow actors, directors, spouses, producers and getting nowhere!
