Unfortunately not according to rule #6.

6. No file sharing programs, not in PM either.

Ok, thanks. I figured as much, since the tut on torrents was moved to the mod section.

I can't say I don't understand why, since so many of the links sites I've known have been shut down.

I believe the main reason they are not permitted is because there is no way to moderate what people put in torrents. It could say Apples but really be Oranges. You're opening up your PC for all kinds of trouble.

My suggestion to all that use torrents: Make sure you have a GREAT Anti-Virus!! And Have a GREAT file deletion program cause you will get assholes that put il legal stuff in files.

Also always use reputable torrent sites, it will help eliminate the il legal activity.

But so can any upload. Yes, someone could stick a virus in a torrent but they could also stick it in a zip & upload to Rapidshare.

Perhaps I'm being a bit naive but I don't see how downloading a torrent is any more dangerous than downloading from a file hosting site.

My Anti-Virus software can scan a Rar file, but not a torrent, and I don't need to leave my PC open and vulnerable.

On a torrent site where people are required to register before they can even view the list, I feel much safer about downloading the torrents. If a torrent file contains a virus, someone will report it and it will be removed by the time I get to it. Not only that, but the members there usually try to keep their share ratios over 1:1, so the downloading is not that slow, sometimes very fast.

I agree, and I always try to look for the torrents with multiple comments, and that have been alive for some time.

Funnily enough, I got a warning from AVG the other week about a torrent I was downloading. Turned out to be a false alarm, though. I think a particular bit pattern in a part-downloaded file must've set it off. I admit that I've not tried it against a real virus, though.
