Like many of you I use a bit torrent client for downloading various apps, music & movies. Downloading via torrents is quite safe if you use the software correctly and use some great plugins that are available.

Has a xxx torrent section ever been suggested for this forum? I know the forum works great as is but the addition of torrents would help with spread of larger files, online hosting works great for small to medium files but when the file size increases it does make downloading difficult for those who do not have premium accounts with rapidshare etc.

Any comments positive or negative welcome.

When someone uploads some 8 part file to Rapidshare, I check my favorite tor Torrent sites. Forums are a better place to find porn, but downloading torrents is easier and cheaper for me.

I agree with Deity, forums are a better place for porn, but I also love torrents. I have a music collection that would cost thousands if I had to buy it all, not to mention all the software I will ever need.

As far as I understand the rules torrents aren't prohibited here so I see no reason why not. One of the senior mods or GS might say different though.

I've wanted to download stuff from torrents in the past but I couldn't get them to work. I'm such a moron when it comes to matters IT. If someone would care to post a step by step idiots guide in the SURFING TIPS AND INTERNET SECURITY section I for one would be very grateful.

Thanks Sojourn for your tutorial and this thread Smile
I use torrents only to search for dvds and big files.
It's easier to dl and if it is a well-seeded file, you can get it very fast.
I myself use utorrent, it's small in size, easy to handle and resource-friendly Very Happy

I like utorrent (micro torrent) but I find the amount of plugins available for Azureus better for me. uTorrent is superb too (my best friend swears by it), it's all about finding the software that ticks all the boxes required for your personal situation. If you do use uTorrent I strongly suggest encrypting your packets too. see below for a how to.(props to torrentfreak)

1. Go to: Options > Preferences > BitTorrent

2. Go to ‘Protocol encryption’, you can choose between ‘enabled’ and ‘****’. ‘Enabled’ will give you more connections but offers less protection against traffic shapers.

I would recommend to try ‘enabled’ first, if that doesn’t increase your speeds you need to swich to ‘****’.

3. Ticking ‘Allow legacy incoming connections’ allows non ecrypted clients to connect to you. This improves compatibility between clients but makes you more vulnerable to traffic shapers.

I would recommend to tick this box, but if that doesn’t increase your speeds, untick

Excellent work Sojourn. I am an avid torrent user myself, but that tutorial will help a lot of people.

Try Btjunkie for great torrent files. (Use Google)

Personally i'm finding things to be much quicker over RS links than torrents.

I don't have the greatest of connections but when it comes to tv shows i'd find myself leaving the computer on over night whereas direct RS links sees me with a show in a few hours flat.

I have no problem with torrents, i'll use them if I have to, but at this stage my preference is still direct links.

What people fail to realise is torreents are coming from peoples HOME connections which means relativly slow uploads compared to rapidshare Unless there are lots of seeds.
More seeds = faster download
seed= persons who have 100% of file you want.
Peers = persons who have 0-99% of file you want.

What advantages are there to torrents? I can't see any . . . and some big disadvantages:

1) security -- you're opening up your machine to the world, eg hackers
2) liability -- your IP address is now associated with sharing what might be someone else's intellectual property. You're also advertising what you're doing to your ISP
3) damned slow

Rapidshare is fast, a one-to-one connection with very little in the way of security/liability issues.

There are always some things which are more readily obtained thru torrents than DDL
