WOW Shocked You guys are doing awesome with these. Shocked That is, assuming no googling of course. Evil or Very Mad

Only three left ... #s 1, 4, and 10. Thought #10 would be easier, as very few songs mention exactly "73 men". Embarassed

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Darkstar? Darkstar?

RM

Googling would be no fun at all... I did that with my own strange mental powers... and I now know who did #10, but can't think of the name of the song (or more particularly, the boat!) It's Gordon Lightfoot and, and.... HOLY SHIT! Someone just told me Anna Nicole Smith just died! Whoah.

So, I googled #10 and, OK, I was way wrong about it being Gordon Lightfoot and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"... but now I am in the same boat as Sir Darkstar (boat, get it?!).

You guys are giving me the BLUES, IMAGine that. Band for #10 is a true honest-to-goodness one-hit-wonder in the USA, with this top ten hit from 1970. Maybe someone else will give it a RIDE?

More hints:

Band for #1 is British, and played at Woodstock. Did have a couple lesser-known "hits". Really decent guitar player who did vocals as well. Where's Gnome, I bet he'd get it.

Song for #4 was banned by many radio stations in 1971 because it involves a little Mary Jane. Cool

RM

p.s. If you could read my mind, you'd know that RM doesn't do Gordon Lightfoot. Rolling Eyes

Gotta tell ya, Bluesy Feelin' Man, that I thought #10 was Gordon Lightfoot - the joke is that the song takes longer than the actual sinking of the ship...! I know that Pearl Jam did an instrumental version of it.

Well, with your hints, I would hafta guess that #1 is Albert Lee? F*ck, is that his name? I can see him boppin' his head in the movie Woodstock, right now, singing Goin' Home.

Here's a bit of Woodstock trivia: did anybody now that a 15 yr old Neil Schon(later of Journey fame), was playing with Santana? 15 YEARS OLD!!!

Great job, Ramblin'! I'd have a go at this meself, but me thinks it'd be better to sit back, spark up, and enjoy the Masters at work!

screenshot

ps...I cheated on this one - with your Mary Jane reference, and me being in the `state' that I am at the moment, I googled it with the `one toke over the line...' line for the bands name. Embarassed Do I get half a point for this, atleast?

Yep, Neal Schon was still a kiid playing before huge crowds. It must have been wild. Being an axeman myself back in the day, I used to love playing the Santana songs off the Abraxas album. And now you know where I got my name. I was listening to that very album the night I found this board and registered here, and so I picked Abraxas as my nick.

I'm ramblin' away until Tuesday night, so I thought I'd end this now so that someone else can have a go. I could do another set of late-70s OHWs at some point, in case anyone would be interested.

screenshot

#1. Ten Years After -- I'd love to change the world. Gnome gets 1/4 point for the correct last name of the guitar/vocalist, Alvin Lee.

#2. Hot Rod Lincoln -- Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Good job Townboy...everyone knows the song but getting the details can be tough.

#3. Rick Derringer -- Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo. Point for God-Squad-Mod with the Prod, Sir Darkstar.

#4. Brewer & Shipley -- One Toke Over the Line. Gnome gets minus 1/2 point for cheating and revealing the song title. Twisted Evil However, Gnome gets an additional 1/4 point for the cool Woodstock Trivia, so he "breaks even" in total. Very Happy (I want him to come back to this thread)

#5. Free -- All Right Now. 1/2 point for Esteban, 1/2 point for Townboy. My own voice is really similar to Paul Rodgers, I used to do covers of several BC songs, favorites being Silver Blue and Gold as well as Shooting Star (Johnny was a schoolboy, when he heard his first Beatles song...). Not quite as good though. Sad

#6. One Tin Soldier/The Legend of Billy Jack -- Coven. Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend, do it in the name of Heaven, you can justify it in the end... Nice snag Townboy.

#7. Norman Greenbaum -- Spirit in the Sky. Sir Darkstar gets his 1 billionth point, and there was much rejoicing (yayyyy).

#8. Argent -- Hold your head up. Townboy representin'. My God man, why haven't you been in this thread before? Laughing

#9. Carl Douglas -- Kung Fu Fighting. Dionysus gets 0.98 points ... even in England Carl is normally spelled with a C. Razz Laughing JK amigo.

#10. Blues Image -- Ride Captain Ride.

Seventy-three men sailed up, from the San Francisco Bay,
Rolled off of their ship, and here's what they had to say.
"We're callin' everyone to ride along, to another shore,
We can laugh our lives away, and be free once more."
But no one heard them callin', no one came at all,
'Cause they were too busy watchin', those old raindrops fall.
As a storm was blowin', out on the peaceful sea,
Seventy-three men sailed off, to history.

Ride, captain ride, upon your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends, you have here on your trip.
Ride captain ride, upon your mystery ship,
On your way to a world, that others might have missed.
(Instrumental break)

Seventy-three men sailed up, from the San Francisco Bay,
Got off their ship, and here's what they had to say.
"We're callin' everyone to ride along, to another shore,
We can laugh our lives away, and be free once more."

(refrain, and fade)

I myself am amazed at - and grateful for - the friends I have here on my forum trip. Smile

See ya in a few.

RM

p.s. Journey ... heh heh heh ... snicker snicker ... Open Arms ... snort snort guffaw ... Rolling Eyes Laughing ... Faithfully ... Embarassed ... bwah-ha-ha ...

Esteban, your wish is my command. Sláinte agus táinte! Very Happy

1.
“Well you stole it ‘cause I needed the cash
And you killed it 'cause I needed revenge.
Well you lied to me 'cause I asked you to.
Baby, can we still be friends?”

2.
And if there's no tomorrow
And all we have is here and now
I'm happy just to have you
You're all the love I need somehow

3.
Understand the things I say, don't turn away from me,
'Cause I've spent half my life out there, you wouldn't disagree.

4.
The Telex machine is kept so clean, and it types to a waiting world
And Mother feels so shocked, Father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 ain't it peach-y keen
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat

5.
Do you remember, the night we were lost
In the shade of the blackthorn, and the chill of the frost
Thanks be to Jesus, we did what was right
And your maiden head still, is your pillar of light

6.
And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old

7.
We were dancing in the middle of the desert
You said we'll burn under the hot sun
I said i'd rather be the colour of pleasure
Than watch like you from under the thumb

8.
Tonight there's gonna be trouble, some of us won't survive
See the boys and me mean business, bustin' out dead or alive
I can hear the hound dogs on my trail
All hell breaks loose, alarm and sirens wail
Like the game if you lose, go to jail

9.
They've got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you, it's no place for the old
When you first took my hand, on a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me, Broadway was waiting for me

10. Hint: Barry Lyndon
Ta bean ab fhearr liom no cath is cead dhiobh nach bhfagham go deo
Is ta cailin speiriuil ag fear gan Bhearla, dubhghranna croin.

(english translation)
There's a woman I'd prefer more to a battalion,
and a hundred of them I will never get
And an ugly, swarthy man with no English has a beautiful girl.

===============================

Go bhfana í ngrá linn, Iad siúd atá í ngrá linn.
Iad siúd nach bhfuil, Go gcasa Dia a gcroíthe.
Agus muna gcasann Sé a gcroíthe
Go gcasa Sé caol na coise acu
Go n-aithneoimid iad as a mbacadaíl.
Cool

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Jesus H. Tap-Dancin' Christ, I thought that was one of the harder ones too. The Pogues are indeed one of the fine bands from Eire.

Good job Baralis, you are correct, sir. Good health and a wet mouth to you! Very Happy

1. is U2 - Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
I think SD woulda got this no problem (maybe he left it for me)

3. Is The Cranberries, I think, not sure what song though I think it's called "Does anyone Care"

4. is The Boomtown Rats - I don't Like Mondays

8. is Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak

That's my best go at this game yet, thanks RM! Very Happy I would have guessed number 9 too.

(Níl a fhios agam) about any of the others.. Laughing or how to speak Irish as good as you Shocked

RM before when I was talking to you (a few months back) I presumed you were either looking up an Irish phrase book or something or else had some sort of online translation but I don't think that's the case. How do you speak in Irish so well?

Were you born here or did you live here for a while? Maybe in the west were is is still spoken a lot? Galway or Sligo maybe? Or maybe you emigrated to America?

I live in Dublin and guess what... "I can't understand a bleedin word you're sayin to me man, allroigh?" Laughing ...Well bits and pieces here and there maybe.

I learned it in school somewhat but only very basic. It's sort of a thing that people do every now and then to say a phrase here and there. Sometimes if I am tired I will say "tá mé ag dull go dtí mo leaba" or if it is cold outside "tá sé an fhuairr" etc. (I probably made a spelling mistake and now you are going to correct me? Laughing )

When I was in school also it was a thing teachers would do. Sometimes they would have a conversation in Irish so the students wouldn't fully know what they were saying. I used to hate that. Twisted Evil Laughing

O.k. RM Reveal yourself!!! Eh, not literally of course just about the Irish speaking thing please.
